As we had to see Mags Dad in Bury hospital :( and with a poor wind forecast for the weekend we decided to take our kayak to Thorpe Woodlands campsite in the forest near Thetford. So we walked our boat the 300m to the river and were ready for the off in ten minutes :) With next to no flow we decided to head upstream, the river was full of weed which made the going slow in places and there were several trees down leaving only just enough room to get past !!! We made it to the sluice at Bridgeham after a couple of hours passing a few canoes going the other way and stopped for an hour for lunch and a read !!! We spoke to a lovelly couple who said it was possible to continue up to Harling and as we needed a newspaper we carried on up river :) The river was much clearer of weed but with no sign of Harling after over an hour I decided climb up the bank and see if I could see Harling church !!! It was like a furness in the field and when I got back to Mag she was shaking as I had spocked a large deer which had ran down one bank along the river right past Mag in the kayak and up the other bank disappearing into the undergrowth and I missed it completely :( With no sign of Harling we turned around to start the long paddle back !!! Another stop at Bridgeham past the family of swans with five young and the male seeing us off !!! and back to our van by six !!! So a top top day we saw lots of fish but sadly no kingfishers !!!
